American basswood is found on moist, deep, loamy soils. These soil characteristics are found on Anderson-Tully Lumber Company’s upland holdings. Basswood is associated with yellow poplar, red oaks and sweetgum. It is moderately tolerant tree and will grow and mature under considerable shade.
Wood Facts
Basswood is a very soft, lightweight wood with a creamy white sapwood and pale reddish brown heartwood. This wood has a very fine, almost indistinct but straight grain pattern. It machines and glues well.
The primary uses of Basswood are for shutters, window blinds, picture frames, carvings and turnings.
